Our Verdict

In 1991, James Dyson founded Dyson in the UK and introduced cyclonic vacuum technology, revolutionizing the vacuum cleaner industry. Over the years, Dyson expanded its product range, including the Dyson bladeless fan in 2009 and their first air purifier in 2015. Air purifiers essentially consist of fans with filters, and given the growing concern about indoor pollution worldwide, it is a logical move for Dyson to enter the air purifier market.

Today, we will review the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde HP09, launched on May 6, 2021, in the USA for $849.99. This model may seem expensive compared to other air purifiers on the market. However, it offers both fan cooling and heating capabilities, setting it apart from other devices.

While most air purifier advancements center on filter technology, Dyson’s bladeless fan design is an innovative feature. We are eager to see how this model compares with other air purifiers.

Why Can You Trust Our Reviews?

In our air purifier reviews, we take a rigorous approach to testing. We don’t simply play around with the units, snap a few photos, and call it a day. Instead, we subject each air purifier to a thorough examination and compare the performance of each unit with others we’ve tested. Additionally, we maintain our integrity by refusing free units in exchange for reviews, which means we invested in purchasing the Dyson HP09 for evaluation.

Here’s an overview of how we conducted our tests:

Step 1: We assessed how quickly the Dyson HP09 purified the air in our 705-square-foot home lab filled with thick incense smoke. Operating the HP09 at its highest fan speed, we utilized an air quality monitor to record its effectiveness.

Step 2: To gauge the unit’s energy efficiency, we employed an energy monitor to measure its electricity consumption in watts while running at both its lowest and highest fan speeds.

Step 3: Utilizing a reliable sound level monitor, we documented the decibel levels emitted by the HP09 when operating at its maximum and minimum fan speeds.

The Dyson HP09 is a versatile air purifier suitable for a wide range of users and environments. We found that its modern design and powerful performance fit perfectly with any interior design without taking up too much space. This makes it an excellent choice for rooms up to 800 square feet. While this upgraded Dyson Pure Hot+Cool is a bit pricey, owners of the original model may not see a compelling reason to switch. However, it is a superb option for those seeking their first fan, heater, and air purifier combo.

Performance

The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde HP09 is a versatile device that can heat, cool, and purify the air. The standout feature is Dyson’s Air Multiplier technology, which offers consistent airflow with 10 fan settings from gentle to strong. This ensures a consistent stream without the typical oscillations found in traditional fans.

In our opinion, we enjoy using the heating function the most. When used as a heater, the HP09 quickly attained a comfortable 22 degrees Celsius in our lab within a few minutes after activating the fan. To conserve energy, it automatically shuts off once it reaches the desired temperature, which can be set up to 30 degrees Celsius. During colder winter months, a unique diffuse mode is activated, directing the airflow away from you to prevent discomfort from cold drafts.

During the summer months, we notice that the cooling feature does not cool the entire room like an air conditioner. Instead, it employs evaporative cooling, which effectively cools the people in its airflow but does not impact the overall room temperature. This is similar to a standard fan’s performance, so it is not a drawback, just a point worth mentioning.

We were surprised by how small the filters were, considering the machine’s large size. The device uses HEPA H13 and activated carbon filters to capture tiny particles as small as 0.1 microns and neutralize odors and gases, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). According to our experts, the Dyson HP09 is ideal for those who suffer from respiratory issues as it effectively eliminates airborne pollutants and allergens.

The Dyson HP09 also breaks down and eliminates formaldehyde using a specialized catalytic filter. Unlike traditional HEPA and carbon filters, its catalytic filter regenerates automatically and does not require replacement after approximately 4,000 hours of use. Compared to standard filters, formaldehyde gas is much smaller than the particles they typically capture. Consequently, the HP09’s ability to destroy rather than capture formaldehyde gas sets it apart as the top choice for those prioritizing indoor air quality.

Performance Dyson HP09
In fan mode, it offers 10 power settings, delivering a consistent stream without the typical oscillations found in traditional fans.

One thing we find frustrating is that the CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) information isn’t transparent for consumers. We hope they update their marketing materials to match the clarity provided for the Chinese market.

Noise level

Many people worry about the noise produced by air purifiers. According to Dyson, the HP09 operates 20% quieter compared to its earlier models. During our tests, the unit operated at 46dB in both Fan mode and Purifier mode when set to the minimum flow rate. It reached a maximum sound level of 63dB when running in Fan mode, and 62dB when operating in Purifier mode.

In the chart below, we compared this Dyson model to other leading air purifiers within its price range to give you an idea of its noise level.

The Dyson app

Apart from the HP09’s performance, we were also impressed with its companion app. When connected to the MyDyson app, you can monitor air quality, filter lifespan, and access smart features remotely. This helps ensure indoor air quality even when you are away. You can even control it using Siri and Alexa.

Though setting it up through the Dyson app can be a bit inconvenient, the app itself is user-friendly and provides detailed data, including overall air quality, PM2.5, PM10, and VOC levels. It comes with an automatic fan speed adjustment feature that responds to the detected pollutant levels, ensuring optimal air quality. Once the setup is complete, you’ll get a big tick, indicating that the air purifier is now ready to perform its task.

We compared the Dyson HP09’s ease of use with other air purifiers in its price range in the chart below.

Design

One drawback of this model is the absence of automatic features, except in Auto mode. The app can manage air quality continuously, but it cannot automatically turn on when low air quality is detected. Dyson users have raised concerns about this limitation in previous devices.

The HP09 arrives in a high-quality branded box, consistent with Dyson’s usual packaging standards. While there is still some plastic, they are making progress in reducing their environmental impact through their packaging efforts.

This model is undeniably one of the best-looking ones we’ve come across. Dyson has perfected its fan-making craft, resulting in the refined design of the Dyson HP09, exuding a premium feel. This tower fan stands out with its gold-effect body, compared to the silver design of earlier models. The color change is subtle yet appealing, adding a touch of sophistication to the room’s decor.

The assembly process is smooth, and it emits a satisfying sound when set up. The unit also includes a matching gold remote that magnetically attaches to the fan, though it can be easily dislodged when the fan is tilted. Despite its compact size (30 inches x 9.8 inches), the unit is lightweight at 12.6 pounds, making it easy to move around. The 5.9-foot cable offers flexibility in placement.

The Hot+Cool Formaldehyde model comes in two colors:

  • Nickel/Gold
  • White/Gold

The bladeless fan is an excellent choice for households with curious kids who tend to put their fingers into anything. Despite its height, it does not feel intrusive to the room. The fan has 350 degrees of oscillation and can be adjusted to tilt up or down. You can also direct the airflow to move forward and backward when needed.

Operational cost

The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde HP09 is priced at $849.99 and can be purchased online through the Dyson store, Amazon, and select local retailers.

When considering an air purifier, you should also think about its operational expenses, including electricity usage and filter replacements. The typical electricity expense for operating an air purifier ranges from $20 to $50 per year, but actual costs can differ significantly.

If you intend to use the heating element, the power consumption significantly increases, averaging around 2500 watts. This highlights the high energy demand for space heaters, resulting in an annual cost of up to $2,000 or more if used frequently. Therefore, be mindful of these costs if you use the heater feature regularly.

Filter cost

Replacing filters is an often overlooked expense associated with air purifiers. To maintain the unit’s optimal performance, Dyson recommends changing them every 12 months with 12 hours of daily use or 6 months with 24 hours of daily use.

The authentic HEPA and activated carbon filters for this unit are priced at $79.99, which is relatively high compared to units with similar performance levels. Alternatively, there are generic filters available on Amazon for $42.99. While these may not match the performance of Dyson’s original filters, it is reassuring to know that more affordable options are available.

Final Thought

The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde HP09 is a high-quality air purification solution with impressive performance and versatility. It suits many users and environments but may not be budget-friendly for everyone due to its initial cost and ongoing filter expenses. If you prioritize clean air and a comfortable living space, the Dyson HP09 is worth considering.
